School of Creative and Professional Writing at Spalding University Fall 2019 Open House

Sunday, November 17, 2019
12:45 PM - 6:00 PM
Status: Registration Closed
Registration period closes Saturday, November 16, 2019

Prospective students of the School of Creative and Professional Writing at Spalding University are invited to an open house from 12:45–6:00 p.m. Sunday, November 17. Visitors will experience a half day of the fall residency and learn about our low-residency programs, faculty, application requirements, and available financial aid.

The Open House begins in the Egan Leadership Center at 901 S. Fourth Street, where guests sit in on a lecture on point of view led by Kathleen Driskell, chair of the School of Creative and Professional Writing. In all genres, POV complicates characterization, setting, tone, voice, and most importantly, our narrator’s relationship to the reader. Writers who don’t understand this complexity can quickly tangle their POV so completely they abandon very promising work. This lecture will survey different points of view and explore some of the advantages—and disadvantages—to the use of each. Open House attendees may want to bring their own writing (3-4 pages of prose or script; or 2-3 poems or picture book texts) to this session to use as a springboard for a writing exercise at the end of the lecture.

Next, guests observe a faculty-led workshop discussion of MFA students’ creative writing. The event continues with an informational session and Q&A with directors and staff of School of Writing. The event wraps up with a reading by prize-winning MFA faculty members.

The open house is free, but reservations are required. For complete information and to reserve your spot, complete the form by Tuesday, November 12.
